Thermodynamics of Color: White Balance & Tint

White balance is the only Lightroom control rooted directly in thermodynamics. Two sliders — Temp and Tint — navigate a two-dimensional map of illumination whose axes were drawn not by Adobe but by Max Planck. Master this map and you gain two powers at once: the forensic ability to neutralize any color cast, and the artistic ability to lie about the light convincingly.

3.1 The Physics & Science

Blackbody radiation and the Kelvin scale. Heat any idealized object (a "blackbody") and it glows, its emitted spectrum determined solely by its temperature, as described by Planck's law of 1900. At ~1,800 K it glows candle-orange; at ~3,000 K, tungsten-warm; at ~5,500 K it emits the balanced spectrum we call daylight white; at 10,000 K and beyond its output skews powerfully blue. Hence the eternal beginner's paradox: higher Kelvin temperatures are bluer ("cooler"-looking), lower temperatures are more orange ("warmer"-looking) — the vocabulary of art (warm/cool) runs exactly opposite to the vocabulary of physics. A light source's correlated color temperature (CCT) is the temperature of the blackbody whose color it most nearly matches.

The Planckian locus and the second axis. Plot every blackbody temperature's chromaticity on the CIE diagram and you trace a graceful arc called the Planckian locus, running from deep orange through white to sky blue. This arc is the Temp slider. But many real light sources do not sit on the arc: fluorescent tubes and many LEDs, with their spiky mercury-line spectra, sit above it (greenish), while some sources sit below (magenta-ish). The perpendicular distance from the locus — signed green versus magenta, formalized as Duv in illumination engineering — is the second dimension, and it is exactly what Lightroom's Tint slider traverses. Temp moves along the blackbody arc (blue↔amber); Tint moves across it (green↔magenta). Two numbers, and every illuminant on Earth is addressable.

Why you never noticed the casts: chromatic adaptation. The human visual system performs continuous automatic white balance. Through von Kries-style adaptation, the retina and visual cortex rescale the three cone signals so that whatever illuminant bathes the scene, familiar objects hold their colors — paper stays "white" under tungsten lamplight that is, photometrically, screaming orange. Cameras have no such reflex; they record the photons as delivered. White balance in software is a chromatic adaptation transform — mathematically, per-channel gain matrices of the von Kries/Bradford family — that does for the file what your cortex does for your eyes. Mixed lighting defeats even human adaptation (a room lit by window daylight and tungsten lamps looks "off" to the naked eye), which is why mixed scenes get their own recipe below.

A professional's unit: the mired. Lighting engineers work in mireds (micro reciprocal degrees): 1,000,000 ÷ Kelvin. The mired scale is perceptually even — a 10-mired shift looks equally strong whether you start warm or cool — whereas equal Kelvin steps look tiny at high temperatures and enormous at low ones. This is why a 500 K correction is drastic at candlelight (1,800→2,300 K ≈ 121 mireds) yet barely perceptible in shade (8,000→8,500 K ≈ 7 mireds). Keep this asymmetry in mind whenever the recipes below give Kelvin offsets.

3.2 The Lightroom Tool & Math

The compensatory logic of the Temp slider — the part everyone gets backwards. On a RAW file, the Temp slider (range 2,000–50,000 K) is a statement about the scene's light, and Lightroom applies the opposite correction. Set 8,000 K and you are telling the engine "this scene was lit by very blue 8,000 K light"; the engine therefore adds amber to neutralize it — and the image gets warmer. Slide left to 3,000 K and you declare the light was orange; the engine adds blue — the image cools. So in practice: drag right = warmer picture, drag left = cooler picture, because you are moving the assumption, not painting color. Tint behaves identically on the green–magenta axis: positive values (magenta compensation) counteract green sources like fluorescents; negative values (green) counteract magenta casts.

RAW versus JPEG — the metadata privilege. Because RAW data is stored before white balance, the As Shot value is merely a metadata suggestion; choosing 3,200 K or 7,500 K in Lightroom re-derives the image from identical sensor data with zero quality penalty — full non-destructive freedom. On a JPEG, white balance was already multiplied into the pixels and quantized to 8 bits; Lightroom can only offer relative sliders (−100…+100) that stretch already-thin data, with the posterization consequences Chapter 1 predicted. This single fact is, for many photographers, reason enough to shoot RAW forever.

The eyedropper (White Balance Selector, shortcut W). Click any pixel and Lightroom computes the Temp/Tint pair that forces that pixel to R=G=B — neutral. Choose the target with care: a light neutral gray in the scene (concrete, gray fabric, a gray card) at roughly 60–90% brightness is ideal. Avoid clipped whites (no color data survives there) and avoid colored objects you merely believe are neutral. The navigator preview updates live as you hover, letting you audition neutralization points before committing.

Skin tone protection — the chemistry. All human skin, across every ethnicity, derives its color from the same two pigments — melanin (brown-orange) and hemoglobin (red) — and therefore occupies one narrow hue band in the orange–red region (roughly 15°–35° on the hue wheel). Ethnic variation lives overwhelmingly in luminance and saturation, not hue. Practical consequences: in the RGB readout, healthy skin virtually always shows R > G > B, with green sitting roughly midway between red and blue. If blue exceeds green on skin, the frame is too cool or too magenta; if green crowds red, a green cast is poisoning the complexion. White balance is thus your first and most powerful skin-tone instrument — long before HSL (Chapter 5) is touched.

3.3 The Practical Recipe

Recipe 1 — Forensic neutrality (product, catalog, reproduction work):

  1. 01At capture, photograph one frame containing an 18% gray card or color checker under the scene's light.
  2. 02In Lightroom, press W, click the gray patch. Temp and Tint snap to scientific neutral.
  3. 03Select all frames from that lighting setup, press Sync (or Shift+Cmd/Ctrl+S) with only White Balance checked — the entire session is neutralized in one gesture.

Recipe 2 — Creative warmth for portraits (golden, inviting):

  1. 01Establish neutral first via Recipe 1 or the eyedropper on any true gray.
  2. 02Add +300 to +600 K above neutral and +3 to +10 Tint (a breath of magenta flatters skin by suppressing sallow green).
  3. 03Verify on skin readouts that R > G > B still holds and no channel clips; the eye forgives generous warmth on faces far more readily than the faintest green.

Recipe 3 — Cool cinematic tension: from neutral, drop −300 to −800 K and hold Tint within ±5; pair with the low-key tone recipe of Chapter 2 and the teal-shadow grade of Chapter 5. Blue-hour cityscapes typically resolve beautifully in the 3,800–4,800 K range, letting tungsten windows burn amber against the ambient blue — deliberate, gorgeous mixed light.

Recipe 4 — Hostile mixed lighting (reception halls, offices, street at dusk):

  1. 01Balance globally for the subject's key light — faces take absolute priority; let the background drift.
  2. 02Then correct the offending zone locally: create a mask over it (Chapter 6) and use the mask's own Temp/Tint controls — local white balance is one of masking's most underused superpowers.
  3. 03When fluorescents or cheap LEDs are involved, expect to add +10 to +40 Tint (magenta) in their zones; their green spike is the signature of spiky-spectrum sources described in §3.1.

Recipe 5 — The Kelvin previsualization drill (training your eye): take one RAW file and render it at 2,800 K, 4,000 K, 5,500 K, 7,000 K, and 9,000 K as virtual copies (right-click → Create Virtual Copy). Study how memory colors — skin, foliage, sky, white cloth — behave at each station. One hour of this drill builds the internal Kelvin compass that lets professionals call white balance within a few hundred Kelvin by eye.
