The Master Workflow

The six chapters assemble into one repeatable sequence. Note the single paradox worth memorizing: the Calibration panel sits at the bottom of the Develop interface but acts first in the processing pipeline — so when a Calibration-driven look is planned, set it early, because it re-voices every color decision made afterward.

The complete order of operations:

1. 01Profile & Calibration (Ch. 1, 5) — choose the rendering starting point; apply any Calibration look now.
2. 02White Balance (Ch. 3) — Temp and Tint before all tone; color casts corrupt every judgment that follows.
3. 03Tonal endpoints (Ch. 2) — Exposure for midtones, Alt-set Whites and Blacks.
4. 04Zone recovery (Ch. 2) — Highlights and Shadows to allocate dynamic range.
5. 05Curve (Ch. 2) — the contrast character: clean S, or matte fade.
6. 06Presence (Ch. 4) — Texture, Clarity, Dehaze in their correct frequency bands.
7. 07Chromatic voice (Ch. 5) — Mixer surgery, then the grading wheels; audit harmonies and memory colors.
8. 08Choreography (Ch. 6) — masks: dodge & burn, sky, subject separation, local white balance.
9. 09Detail & export (Ch. 1) — sharpening/noise at 100% zoom, then the destination-correct color space and bit depth from the export table.

Two disciplines separate the elite colorist from the preset consumer. The first is diagnosis before treatment: every slider in this book answers a specific physical or perceptual problem — noise from photon statistics, veiling from Mie scattering, banding from quantization, flat faces from absent local contrast — and the professional names the problem before reaching for the control. The second is calibrated restraint: the recipes' numerical ranges are starting coordinates, not destinations, and the final arbiter is always the stepped-back, fit-to-screen view where technique must disappear into intention. Return to any image you graded this month, name the harmony scheme, read the skin channels, hunt the halos — the day your own old work makes you wince is the day this curriculum has taken hold.
