How to Use This Guide

This guide is built on a single conviction: you cannot truly master a slider until you understand what it is doing to light. Every chapter therefore follows the same four-part blueprint. First, The Physics & Science explains what is happening to photons, silicon, or your own retina. Second, The Lightroom Tool & Math translates that science into what Adobe's processing engine is actually computing when you drag a control. Third, The Practical Recipe gives you exact, numbered procedures with numerical target ranges for distinct moods — true-to-life, high-key, low-key, and cinematic. Fourth, Visual Aid Placement specifies precise, art-directed image search prompts to embed at that point in the finished layout.
A note on the visual aids: prompts describing photographic subjects (portraits, landscapes, fog, golden hour) are written for stock libraries such as Unsplash and Pexels and will return excellent results verbatim. Prompts describing diagrams, histograms, or Lightroom interface states are art direction — they describe exactly what the illustration must show, and are best fulfilled with a purpose-made diagram or an annotated screenshot from your own Lightroom catalog, since interface screenshots are not reliably available on stock platforms.
All numerical recipes in this book are calibrated for Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw using Process Version 5 (the current 2012-lineage engine), and they transfer directly to Lightroom desktop, Lightroom mobile, and Camera Raw inside Photoshop, which share the same imaging core.
