Editing notes
Nikon's rendering is the most neutral of the big three — less warm than Canon, less green than older Sony — which makes it an unusually clean base for heavy grading. Greens in foliage are rendered more accurately and often need less HSL correction.
Looks that suit these files: Golden hour, teal shadows, Moody matte, cool grade.
The files it writes
The Nikon Z6 II records RAW as .nef. Offers 12-bit and 14-bit as an explicit menu choice rather than changing it behind your back. 14-bit for anything with shadows you intend to open.
What a .nef file actually contains — compression, bit depth, embedded previews and which software reads it.
